Before SURÁ, we were entrepreneurs, executives, and creatives working in California. Many people heard their purpose calling during the pandemic—and we share that story. When the borders opened, we ventured throughout Costa Rica, seeking something we didn’t even know we were looking for. We followed Fortune’s call and ended up in Playa Negra. As soon as we stepped on this land, we knew it was kismet. Our journeys brought us here—and now yours has too.

Whether you came to lounge on the pristine beaches, surf the glassy gleaming waves at sunset, or explore the biodiversity of Guanacaste, there’s something here for everyone. The province offers ecological and culturally unique notes that reflect its Nicaraguan heritage. Many of the local inflections come from the ​​indigenous Corotega who dominated this region during the pre-Columbian era. Today, Playa Negra is renowned for the cult classic Endless Summer II, which serves as its idyllic surf setting.

SURÁ was given its namesake after the Guayabón Surá trees, an emergent species at the top of rainforest canopies that sheds its bark to reveal a beautiful smooth texture. Deeply connected to nature and Madre Tierra, we sought the insight and imagination of arquitecta Magda Urban. With her vision, we crafted an intentional space for those who are seeking an experience enveloped in wellness and willful eco-ambiance. All of our structures are made from Surá, which mythology believed were givers of life—connecting heaven and earth or the spirits and people.
